I have been placing and restoring dental implants since 1998 and have placed over 10,000 implants and completed many sinus floor grafts, lifts and bone grafting cases since.

2001-2002 I became a diplomat of the Tatum Implant Institute in the UK for comprehensive and advanced implant surgery.

Successfully completed a 2 Year Diploma program in Advanced Oral Implantology, University of Lille2, France.

Experienced in the provision of ALL-on-x full mouth implant bridges.

Experienced in the provision of immediate implants, bone manipulation and sinus grafting and lifting, also all types of blocks and particulate grafting using autogenous bone and various bio-materials.

I was a clinical mentor in the one-year advanced implantology courses with Nobel Biocare and Implantium UK.

Both the mentor and mentee should:

  • Have “adequate and appropriate” indemnity cover (Dentists Act, 2005).
  •  This should include specific cover for dental implant treatment appropriate to the level of complexity of treatment undertaken.
  • The parties are advised to contact their defense union to ensure that they have adequate cover to fulfil medico-legal requirements and GDC guidelines before providing implant treatment as a mentor/mentee
  • Be suitably trained or experienced

A mentor should exercise skill and care in:

  • Assessing the specific needs of a patient
  • Deciding what procedures to allow the mentee to undertake under his supervision 
  • Assessing the mentee’s ability to perform a particular treatment with respect to an individual patient needs 
  • Providing proper and adequate level of supervision (direct/indirect) in the circumstances of a given case 
  • Obtaining patients consent for treatment under supervision

How I Structure the Mentorship Journey

An initial meeting to assist you to set your goals, resulting in the drawing up of an action plan or personal development plan (PDP)

Arrange meetings to support and motivate you to implement the plan. The meetings could be in person, online; or through booked telephone conversations. Learning will be facilitated through provision of practical information, guidance and links to resources.

There should be regular feedback, review of progress and recording of the achievements within the plan, which may well amend and feed back into the initial action plan as a result of learning.

The Initial Meeting 

An informal call to assess your eve of experience, your practice environment and your individual needs, which would include a discussion about our future relationship and to introduce you to the mentorship documentation and essential records.

We can then agree on a format based on your individual circumstances, and future outlook. 

I would need to have sight of certain documents as well as make sure you are familiar with current guidelines.

• Current GDC certificate 

• Certificates for additional registerable qualifications 

• Current indemnity certificate – specifically covering the clinician for the appropriate level of work with dental implants 

• Hepatitis B certificate of immunisation and immunity 

• Records of verifiable CPD for at least the last 2 years, which should include appropriate amounts of CPD related specifically to the core subjects of Radiography and Radiation protection (and, if appropriate CBCT referrer training certificate), Disinfection and Decontamination, and Medical Emergencies 

• Be familiar with the latest version of the Training Standards in Implant Dentistry for General Dental Practitioners from the GDC. Having read the Training Standards in Implant Dentistry for General Dental Practitioners from the GDC.

Why keep a Learning Portfolio?

The Portfolio provides:

  • Supervisor-validated evidence and record of training
  • Record of achievement of core competencies in implant dentistry
  • Evidence of the maintenance of fitness to practice through continuing professional development
  • Logbook of cases and audit of clinical results

What is in the Learning Portfolio?

  • The Personal Development Plan from the first meeting and amended as and when necessary in light of new learning
  • Audited Logbook of all implant activity
  • Record of structured case presentations (5 to 10 cases written in highly structured format illustrating the quality of decision making and evidence base for the treatment provided)
  • Competency assessment forms filled by mentors documenting attainment of core principles and skills.
  • Reflective statements to provide self-critique and development areas.

Training Standards in Implant Dentistry

The 2016 “Training Standards in Implant Dentistry” document states that “Before undertaking implant treatment, a dentist must develop competence in the procedures involved in clinical assessment, treatment planning, and the placement and restoration of implants. The skills and knowledge necessary for competence should be developed through a training course in implant dentistry, with a suitably trained and experienced clinician acting as a mentor.” This further endorses the importance of the role of mentoring.

Dr Tatum is widely regarded as one of the world’s most skilled dental implant surgeons and is unmatched in his surgical and conceptual talent.

We developed and have been performing bone manipulation techniques for over 50 years. This includes ridge expansion, inter-positional augmentation techniques and of course the sinus augmentation procedure, which we also introduced. We also introduced onlay bone augmentation into implantology 49 years ago, but realize that, when possible, bone manipulation is safer, simpler, more predictable and less expensive.

I realised early on in my implant career that the body is a wonderful organism that is programmed to heal. So surgical techniques need to respect the body and work with it not against it. This means excellent surgical technique, delicate soft tissue handling and maintaining a blood supply to the surgical site.

Respect these principles and the body will heal and create the outcomes we desire. Bone manipulation techniques are a skillset that requires patience, skill and dedication to master but once this is achieved are of lifelong benefit to the practitioner.

I am passionate that the field of dental implantology should be led by clinicians who have their patients’ interests to the fore and not by companies whose primary interest is the sale of graft products and profits.

I have been teaching all my clinical life and in the early 1990’s came to work in the United Kingdom where, amongst others I met and worked with, Sam who is a friend, colleague and also my student. I worked him for approximately a quarter of a century.

From an early juncture it was evident that he would develop to be leaders in the field of implant dentistry in the UK and abroad. It gives me great pleasure to have played a part in his formative years and career development.

I am so proud that he is passing on his skills and knowledge to his professional colleagues so that the body of evidence-based knowledge is enriched for the benefit of patients and practitioners. It is important to make dental implantology accessible to all in the dental profession and therefore patients safe in the knowledge that they are obtaining a service that will improve the quality of their life.

    I was a clinical mentor in the one year advanced implantology courses with Nobel Biocare and Implantium UK.

    I was the postgraduate dental tutor for north East Lincolnshire from 2008 till 2014 for the Yorkshire and Humber deanery organizing all postgraduate educational activities in the region.

    I am an accredited Mentor for Dental Implants (Cambridge Implant Academy)

    I am the co-founder and Director of the Practical Impantology Academy, teaching many dental practitioners the art and science of implant dentistry at beginner and advanced levels.

    I am passionate teacher and mentor; I mentor many young dentists and surgeons in various disciplines of general, restorative and Implant Dentistry in the UK and abroad.

    I run a 100% private general and referral practice in North Lincolnshire accepting referrals for all aspects of Implant dentistry.

    Graduated in 1986 from Cairo University Dental School, moved to the UK in 1989 and enrolled in the fellowship program in dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow.

    Worked in various hospital posts before moving to general practice in 1995.

    1997-1999 I became a member of the L.D.Pankey Association, attending and completing various courses in Implant Dentistry, Occlusion and Restorative Dentistry. And gained my first certificate in implant dentistry from the ITI institute.

    Teaching activities:

    1.I have actively participated in practical teaching at the Harpole center, Northampton, assisting Dr. Stuart Orton-Jones in the running of many of his courses.

    2. I have lectured in Newcastle Dental School, as a guest speaker for ITI, at a Dental implant symposium back in 1998, presenting my first graft and implant case.

    3. In October 2002, I attended the Alexandria International Dental Conference, Alexandria, Egypt as a guest speaker. I gave a lecture on the concept of beauty as applied to aesthetic dentistry.

    4. In April 2004, I ran a Treatment planning course for Junior postgraduate dentists at the Institute of Dental Research, Alexandria, Egypt.

    5. 2009-2011 Ran a 1 year comprehensive dental implant teaching courses with Dr Chris Lucas and Dr Paul Sherrard for Nobel Biocare at Lavender Road Dental Practice in Leicester. 

    6. From 2008 until 2014 I was the postgraduate dental tutor for my region here in the UK (North East Lincs.). I organised various postgraduate  practical courses as well as evening lectures for local dental practitioners to update their knowledge and practical skills in various dental disciplines. 

    7. I was a clinical mentor in the one year advanced implantology course at Implantium UK (Bristol and Shrewsbury) for 1 year in 2014.

    8. I co-founded the Practical Implantology Academy in 2016 with my colleague Dr Mukesh Soni, (and now with Dr Azhar Shiekh) we run many courses related to the various diciplines of Implant Dentistry and currently running the 3rd cohort  (www.practicalimplantology.com) .
